A Son is Born to Us
Christmas Mass to mark the Thomas Tallis 500th Anniversary

The sublimely gifted early Tudor composer Thomas Tallis composed this enchanting Mass for seven voices to mark the Christmas celebrations at the court of Mary Tudor and her husband Phillip II of Spain. Mary was herself longing for a prince and heir, giving the context of this Mass a particular poignancy. Along with the related seven-part motet Suscipe quaeso, the Mass Puer natus est nobis is an outstanding work and a fitting choice for us to mark the quincentenary of one of Britain’s best-loved composers. You can hear both works sung in a framework of plainsong and a selection of Tallis’s organ music, for which we are joined by eminent Scottish-based organists, revealing the great inventive powers of this renaissance musical genius.

City of Love

Cappella Nova’s Quintet celebrates St Valentine’s Day in exquisite vocal chamber music. This inventive, fast-paced programme roves from madrigals to Medieval love songs (including some of the original Carmina Burana ditties) and from Romantic part songs to The Beatles. Amongst the featured works is Benjamin Britten’s highly-charged Hymn to St Cecilia, and there’s also an amorous musical text-message by Peter McGarr, plus a romantic homage to the music of Hildegard of Bingen by Sheena Phillips, and something from our own Robert Burns. Love is in the air as we fill it with sound!

Italian Passion

Our Holy Week meditation this year take us to Venice. Eight singers will explore the intense expressive world of Antonio Lotti, performing his Miserere and the anguished eight-part Crucifixus: music which not only evokes the torments of Christ, but which also seems to conjure the mist-wreathed gothic maze of canals and palazzi that make up La Serenissima. A selection of Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigals in their passionate sacred versions will be performed in Scotland for the first time, and all will be set within the framework of plainsong from the liturgies of Holy Week.

The plainsong will be sung by:-
Aberdeen Schola, directed by Roger B Williams (12 April)
Scottish Plainsong Choir, directed by Alan Tavener (13, 14 & 15 April)

A New Song

Twelve singers present majestic, sonorous, richly inventive music spanning 500 years, with the six-part Cantate Domino Mass, attributed to the Scottish musical genius Robert Carver, as our centre-piece. This Mass is based on a phrase from the Psalm ‘O sing to the Lord a new song’. Taking the idea of songs and singing as our theme, the programme includes plainchant and glorious renaissance polyphony, and will also feature the world premiere of new work commissioned by us from one of the UK’s leading young composers, Roxanna Panufnik.

End our season with us on a high note, celebrating the very art of music, and looking ahead to the 2006/07 season in which Cappella Nova celebrates its 25th anniversary.
