    The Thistle and The Rose

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the marriage of King James IV of Scotland to Margaret Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, in 1503, this disc features yet more rare gems from the Carver Choirbook in world premiere recordings.

The vivid, masterly Mass Deus Creator Omnium (anonymous, but possibly by Walter Frye) is the main work, alongside Carver’s exquisite, virtuoso Mass for Three Voices (sung by members of Canty).

"The best thing about this disc is Cappella Nova’s singing. It has a fluency and directness, purity and a palette of colour that combine to reveal the music’s extraordinarily expressive fusion of simplicity and elaboration." (The Daily Telegraph) (ASV CD GAU 342)

Accompanied on the medieval wire-strung clarsach (Celtic harp) by William Taylor, the sequence of beautiful responsories, lections and antiphons tell stories of this most intriguing of saints as they might have been heard in medieval Ireland.
